Our Story
40,000+ years of history
Callan Park sits on the land of the Wangal and Gadigal people of the Eora nation. Both peoples have cared for these lands and waterways since time immemorial — long before the sandstone buildings arrived. We acknowledge their enduring connection to Country and pay our respects to Elders past and present.
Wangal & Gadigal Country
Eora Nation — custodians of this land for at least 40,000 years. The Wangal and Gadigal people lived along the shores of Iron Cove and the Parramatta River, fishing its tidal waters, gathering shellfish and native plants, and maintaining deep spiritual and cultural ties to this Country. Shell middens along the Iron Cove foreshore remain as evidence of their continuous presence.
1788
British colonisation — the arrival of the First Fleet brings profound and devastating disruption to the Wangal people and all First Nations communities across the continent.
1839
Garry Owen Estate — Crown Solicitor and Police Magistrate John Ryan Brenan purchases the land and names it the Garry Owen estate. His residence, Garry Owen House, is built on an elevation overlooking the Parramatta River, possibly designed by Colonial Architect Mortimer Lewis.
1873
Renamed "Callan Park" — after Brenan's bankruptcy, Sydney businessman John Gordon acquires the estate, renames it Callan Park and subdivides the land for auction as a new waterfront suburb.
1878
Kirkbride Block opens — designed by Colonial Architect James Barnet in the Italian Romanesque style, the complex becomes a landmark of compassionate mental health care.
1915
Broughton Hall built as a convalescent facility, its brick and sandstone construction setting a new standard for patient-centred design.
1991
Rozelle Hospital closes. Community campaigns begin to protect the precinct from residential development and open it to the public.
2010
Heritage listing — the entire precinct is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register, protecting its architecture and landscape in perpetuity.
Today
Open to all — artists, community groups, schools and families share a revitalised parkland that honours its history while serving the present.
